Why Black Friday Is a Trap (Wall Street Journal - Personal Finance)

By BRETT ARENDS

Don't be fooled by Black Friday.

Sure, you might just snag a cheap TV—if you stand in line for a few hours, sprint down the aisles and karate-chop some of your competing shoppers.

But for most people, doing your Christmas or Hanukkah gift shopping on this day is probably going to be a bad move. You have a much better chance of getting good deals across the board if you just wait.

Why?

Easy. Retailers don't want you to know this, but they have come into the holiday shopping season with plenty of inventory. Their shelves are groaning under the weight of the stuff. Their stockrooms are full. They've got all this stock they need to sell by Christmas. And if they don't shift enough of it early, they are going to start cutting prices.

Check out the official data from the U.S. Commerce Department. General retail inventories—excluding food and beverage stores, and vehicles and parts—stood at a thumping $294 billion at the end of the third quarter. That's up from last year. It's less than 7% below the all-time, ridiculous peak seen in 2008, at the tail end of the biggest debt-fueled consumerist bubble in human history. Seven percent. And it's way above the levels that were considered normal just six or seven years ago.

Retailers are betting that people are going to spend pretty aggressively this holiday season.

Maybe they're right. So far, this year has been okay. "Retail sales trends over the past couple of months have been pretty solid," says Michael Baker, a retail analyst at Deutsche Bank. "Consumer spending has held up well." The latest data show a rise in consumer spending through October. And Tiffany reports the wealthy are spending freely again.

Still, there are reasons to question how strong the spending might be over the holidays—especially for all those who aren't members of the Tiffany crowd.

Unemployment is very high. Many former middle-class families have drained their bank accounts and are running on fumes. Home prices—the key to family wealth—have headed back down again. And we are in the early stages of a generational change, as Americans learn once again to spend less and save more.

Sorry to be gloomy, but there it is.

Oh, and all this talk about Americans "deleveraging" their balance sheets is somewhat misleading. Sure, credit-card debt is down. So is mortgage debt. But there is a long, long way to go before household balance sheets look healthy again. And one of the big reasons debt levels have fallen is simply that a lot of it has been written off.

Retailers built up their inventories because they had to. They depend on holiday sales.

The problem for them is that the Christmas season is like a poker game where they have to bet first. They can't afford to miss out on possible sales—but you can afford to wait to see how spending is going to go. In poker, the advantage goes to those who bet last.

No wonder they are so eager to get you down to the mall as early as they can. Hence the Black Friday hype. But from your point of view, the odds favor making them wait.

FDA Bans Two Painkillers. Have Sex Instead!

By Steve Belanger

Two popular painkillers, Darvon and Darvocet, have been taken off the market by the Food & Drug Administration. The drugs were used by over 10 million people past year, according to FDA reports. Even though they’ve been on the market for more than 50 years, new studies suggest that they lead to heart arrhythmias. The FDA is advising doctors to stop prescribing the medications, and users to ask their physicians about alternatives. Read More...

Japan takes vending machines to their logical, 47-inch touchscreen extreme

Time for us to admit another entrant into the hall of unnecessary, but cool inventions. Installed at Tokyo's Shinagawa Station yesterday, this latest spin on the vending machine dispenses with those silly windows unto what you're buying and furnishes its user with a 47-inch touch panel from which to make his (or her) selection. An embedded camera will recognize your gender and age, allowing the machine to recommend a beverage suitable to whatever stereotype is attached to your particular circumstances. And don't worry, it'll store your purchasing history too, so you can be freaked out by tailored ads every time you use it. 500 more of these WiMAX-equipped units are planned to be installed in and around Tokyo over the next two years, with operating company JR East expecting them to tally up 30 percent more sales than their analog brethren. More bling equals higher revenue? Sounds about right. View Article

Nas's Letter to DefJam!!!!!!!

From: Nas
To: LA Reid, Steve Bartels, Steve Gawley, Michael Seltzer, Joseph Borrino, Chris Hicks
Subject: PUT MY SH*T OUT!

Peace to all,

With all do respect to you all, Nas is NOBODY's slave. This is not the 1800's, respect me and I will respect you.

I won't even tap dance around in an email, I will get right into it. People connect to the Artist @ the end of the day, they don't connect with the executives. Honestly, nobody even cares what label puts out a great record, they care about who recorded it. Yet time and time again its the executives who always stand in the way of a creative artist's dream and aspirations. You don't help draw the truth from my deepest and most inner soul, you don't even do a great job @ selling it. The #1 problem with DEF JAM is pretty simple and obvious, the executives think they are the stars. You aren't.... not even close. As a matter of fact, you wish you were, but it didn't work out so you took a desk job. To the consumer, I COME FIRST. Stop trying to deprive them! I have a fan base that dies for my music and a RAP label that doesn't understand RAP. Pretty fucked up situation

This isn't the 90's though. Beefing with record labels is so 15 years ago. @ this point I just need you all to be very clear where I stand and how I feel about "my label." I could go on twitter or hot 97 tomorrow and get 100,000 protesters @ your building but I choose to walk my own path my own way because since day one I have been my own man. I did business with Tommy Mottola and Donnie Einer, two of the most psycho dudes this business ever created. I worked well with them for one major reason....... they believed in me. The didn't give a f**k about what any radio station or magazine said....those dudes had me.

Lost Tapes is a movement and a very important set up piece for my career as it stands. I started this over 5 years ago @ Columbia and nobody knew what it was or what it did but the label put it out as an LP and the fans went crazy for it and I single handlely built a new brand of rap albums. It's smart and after 5 years it's still a head of the game. This feels great and you not feeling what I'm feeling is disturbing. Don't get in the way of my creativity. We are aligned with the stars here, this is a movement. There is a thing called KARMA that comes to haunt you when you tamper with the aligning stars. WE ARE GIVING THE PEOPLE EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT. Stop throwing dog s**ton a MAGICAL moment.

You don't get another Nas recording that doesn't count against my deal....PERIOD! Keep your bulls**t $200,000.00 fund. Open the REAL budget. This is a New York pioneers ALBUM, there ain't many of us. I am ready to drop in the 4th quarter. You don't even have s**tcoming out! Stop being your own worst enemy. Let's get money!

to all readers, don't flip out..this is just my opinion:
without trying to sound like a "broken record',I will 1st say this is another good example of people focusing more on the individual as opposed to what is be presented for discussion.trashing personalities independent of the subject doesn't allow for successful critical engagement, instead turns this post into the usual pissing contest, where some people try to "out wit" one another,[making the whole thread look infantile in the process].

as I see it,there are 2 different angles to see here.the label, for whatever reason feels they don't have good enough product to put out.they feel their job is to push the best product they can,in order to make the most $ they can.these white people that own the companies that put rap out don't care about one's personal issues, they want their money.and they staff mufuckaz who can make this happen.alot of times they are slick talking, used car salesman types, thinking they can just fast talk the artist into doing whatever it takes to get them to hand in their project, why do you think they have closed door "marketing meetings".

on the other side of the coin, this is NAS's FAULT.nas knew how record companies get their pimp on.he came in the door with d**k up in his ass,[thru mc serch].this is a business.[other than those at the philadelphia based label ruffhouse],who at columbia really knew anything about rap? his whole discography is an example of a career filled with indecesiveness on his part.one minute he's trying to make conscious raps, the next he's trying to be a party boy,the next he's going back to raw mc skills, the next he's a gangsta thug don,the next...then after his highest profile beef with jay z,he drinks the kool aid jay offers, and signs with jay & def jam, knowing damn well the house that rush built is no more than a brand & everything that made that label special had long since left the building.did he do it for the upfront money or the publicity or both? [I think I read an interview with jay z where he even states nas's cd wasn't ready yet,it wasnt a matter of holding him back].these labels are the pimps & the artist are the hoes.and they get house niggers to keep the hoes in line.these djs, producers, artists, former artists or whatever get the opportunity to make the current roster step n fetch,or THEY will be out the door & massur will find some new house niggers to replace them.[notice when a record executive gets fired or leaves, whole staffs of people under that executive leave as well,if they can swing the way the replacement token swings].again everyone was like,oh jay z is an executive.def jam's president.no jay z is a house **** [in this stance],doing what the white man instructs him to do.l.a. reid is a house **** ,after building up his own laface brand [with the assistance of babyface, who once departing from the creative side of the label,it started to go downhill],he sold out,[much like bob johnson did with b.e.t.] to the whites.f**k the suits,f**k the demeanor, these are MODERN DAY HOUSE NIGGERS.I'm almost willing to wager 9o% of any position in the music industry is filled with house **** scum.as for them feeling like they are the stars, they are the "decesion makers",per se,so they feel their "titles",their expense accounts, their perks for working at the label, make them bigger than they truly are.and yes their are some "hoop dreams deflated" ass mufuckaz that couldn't make it to be a star,so this is where they wound up..and there a re,believe it or not, alot of people still having dreams of being artists,so they take those positions,to attempt to bolster or revitalize their own careers.this is a business.mufuckaz are monopolizing every aspect of it..and everyone in the monoply has their own agenda..

why wouldn't an artist, particularly one with an already existing fanbase, not go the independent route? own your product. make $7 [or more a unit],control your destiny.what does the cosigning of a major label in 2010 really mean? [white people picked you as the new jiggaboo? ok you get some radio & video but in 2010,technology is so out there, you dont really need that..then what do you do/ get on the videos & cheese & coon and throw money, slap bitches asses, flash jewels,(or the new jewels-cars) show your teeth, high & drunk & on whatever other drugs & act ignorant]..true,the exposure isnt the same the outlets are the same, but they are controlled by "US" which makes a big difference.[I bet many of you didnt know that suge knight, irv gotti & j prince where in the process of forming a black owned distribution network to rival those of the major labels..or did you think the feds fucking with all three of them in one form or another was a coincidence]?? n***a need to bow down at wendy day's feet & pay her consultation [and maybe even slide her sum d**k if that's what she wants-no disrespect] to learn how to truly maneuver amongst snakes, rats, vultures & house **** scum.

back in the day,you could simply turn in a bulls**t album & get released for it not selling..now mufuckaz are just shelved until the thrill is gone.maybe nas should take the cufi off & go talk to camron,[he got out of his original deal & went on to become a powerhouse with the diplomats brand].two things are for certain: 1,kelis pimped nas to the point where that dude needs to get his finances in order.tighten his brand up & go pimp himself & get his money [and pay yo taxes n***a]. & 2,with times the way they are now, economically 7 technologically, now more than ever,we as artist as hip hop as blacks in america, need to control what we create, and that means complete control, not sleeping with the enemy [and risk catching an std or something].

I don't know it all,in fact,I don't know anything.but I do know that we as a people [artists, hip hop,as blacks] cannot afford to let what is happening continue.there are too many examples of whites & sellout blacks pimping.if any pimping is going to go on,we need to pimp ourselves..we need to educate ourselves & instead of presenting the next metrosexual tight shirt & pants, man purse,d**k kissing, scarf wearing, wine drinking,f***ot dance step, sensitive ass, alabama porch monkey, getting high saying outrageous s**tfor attention,or focusing on the next shaved head bisexual white b***h fucking a n***a,who in his raps claims he's a boss, but in real life is a trick making no boss like moves,or the next video vixen who sucked & fucked her way into the limelight, then when she can't get another dollar out of her washed up wrinkled p***y,wants to write a tell all..and try to get into movies [b***h plz]..cuz she's got seeds to feed, let's try to focus on this game with intellect.get your business acumen,or for you who cant google that term, get paperwork game up.become self contained.do it for the love, not cuz you have to pay bills,to maintain a lifestyle.

"..I'll never let a hoe,pimp me.."-"pimp me" too $hort

[who incidentally doesnt own any of HIS masters either..is classified as a legend in the rap game himself, but as a business man,is just another n***a-no disrespect].

Ps3 update 3.42 removes the possibility of JailB..

Sony has released new firmware for PlayStation 3 game console stating it is a "minor" mandatory update. Yes, this new PS3 update 3.42 patches all possibility of jailbreaking the game console. Since Sony has temporarily nixed any jailbreak possible with this new update, it is obvious that the PS3 hacking community is busy searching workarounds to by-pass the update.

Earlier this month, PS3 hacking community members released PSGroove jailbreak source code to jailbreak into the game console. As expected, Sony's PlayStation 3 developers have released a patch in form of firmware 3.42 update to close the exploit that executes the jailbreak. Eric Lempel, Director for Hardware Marketing shelled out no detail in the blog post at official PlayStation Blog but only stated that it includes additional security features.

Sony had used similar words when it removed installing other OS support from the previous generation PlayStation 3. And now, PlayStation 3 hacking community joked around by introducing PSGroove jailbreak for PS3 executed via iPhone, Android phone, and even TI Calculator.

Do remember that if you play games over a hacked/jailbroken PlayStation 3, you might end up being banned from PlayStation Network.

How does Blogger Mobile work?

How does Blogger Mobile work?

How does Blogger Mobile work?

You send a message - which can be a photo, some text, or both - to go@blogger.com. We take care of the rest. In other words, we auto-provision a new blog and publish the post. It's that simple.

Here's how to start a mobile blog:

  1. Text REGISTER to BLOGGR to create your mobile blog. The text and/or photo in your message will be uploaded to that blog right away. We'll message you back with the address, (so you can visit your new blog on the web) and a token (so you can claim your blog and access it from your account).

  2. OPTIONAL - If you feel like changing anything on your new mobile blog or if you already have a Blogger account and want the posts to go to your existing blog, you can log in to go.blogger.com and enter the token we sent to your phone. You'll then have the option to claim your new mobile blog and merge it with your existing blog. Note to users whose blog address does not contain blogspot.com: Once you make the aforementioned switch, new mobile posts will be published to your chosen blog but mobile posts published prior to the switch will not be moved over automatically.

What types of messages can I send to Blogger Mobile from my phone?

MMS, SMS, or Email - note this doesn't include email sent from a mobile device that actually passes through a webmail gateway (such as mail sent from your stanford.edu account from your phone).

What size photos can I send?

Photos are currently limited to 250K each. If they exceed that size, you'll receive a bounce message letting you know so you can try again with a smaller picture. Note that your phone (or carrier) might have size limits of its own.

Is there a cost for using Blogger Mobile?

Mobile providers' standard rates for sending and receiving text and photo messages apply. Blogger won't charge you for any of its services.

Requirements

Text messaging-enabled mobile device with a text messaging plan. This service is free from Google but charges from your carrier for usage may apply.

Eight Clever Ways to Take Advantage of Free Calling in Gmail

gmail-with-voice-bp.jpgYou already know Gmail integrated with Google Voice for free phone calls (and cheap international calls) from your inbox. But apart from using it to a friend, Gmail's new phone calling capabilities introduce a lot of cool capabilities to your inbox.

Get Caller ID from Your Computer

caller-id.jpgLet's say you've got a landline set up with Google Voice and you don't want to pay for caller ID. Or you just spend a lot of time staring at your computer. If you're logged into Gmail, and someone rings up your Google Voice number, you can see who's calling on your computer without digging your phone out of your pocket.

Transfer Calls to (and from) Your Computer to Save Cellphone Minutes

enable-google-chat-2.jpgAssuming you've already added your Gmail Chat account as a number that can be reached through Google Voice (which also assumes you've signed up for Google Voice), you can transfer calls from your phone to your computer to save cellphone minutes. Here's how it works:

1) If you're logged into your Google account, go to the Google Voice phone settings page. At the bottom, you should see a new option for Google Chat (like in the image). Make sure it's checked.

2) Now, when you're in the midst of a call on your cellphone—let's say you were talking to someone in the car, and now you're home—just hit the * (asterisk) on your phone's number pad to send the call to another Google Voice phone. If your Gmail account is open, your inbox should start ringing. Pick up in Gmail and hangup your cellphone.

The opposite works, as well—i.e., transferring calls out from Gmail to your cellphone. Oh, and remember: If you've got a decent Bluetooth headset, you should also be able to stay relatively mobile, even if you're talking from your computer.

Find Your Misplaced Phone

Misplace your cellphone under a pile of clothes or deep in your couch cushions? If you left your ringer on but don't have another phone on hand, just log into Gmail, dial your cellphone number, and follow the faint sound of ringing.

Use It for a Quick-and-Dirty Speakerphone for Group Calls

Google Voice is already pretty good at setting up conference calls (demonstrated in the video above). Now that you can call from your computer, you've also got a quick-and-dirty speakerphone perfect for the group of people sitting around a table on your coast.

Make a Quick Followup Call in Response to an Email

This is less of an "amazing new thing" than a nice, practical side effect of having one more thing integrated with your inbox. Say you get an email from a colleague. You want to send a quick followup, but it's going to be a lot more appropriate talking than typing a reply. Dial the person up in Gmail and talk it out without disrupting your workflow.

Secretly Record Calls

Google Voice has handy recording function, but whenever you enable it (hit 4 to start and finish recording), Google Voice announces "This call is now being recorded." Prefer to record a conversation surreptitiously? Calling from Gmail puts the audio on your computer, where you can use any number of tools to record your system audio on-the-sly. (For example, despite what I thought at the time, Whitson later told me he wasn't aware I was recording the call in the video above.) File this under the know-your-state-laws category.

Prank Time

prank-call-soundboard.jpgSpeaking of neat things you can do now that your computer hardware is accessible for both inputs and outputs, consider this: If you set your onboard system audio as your default input device rather than a microphone, you can, say, play the caller a little song. That's maybe a little boring. On the other hand, it's even easier to navigate to your favorite prank call soundboard and have a little fun.

Make Free Calls Anywhere You've Got Free Wi-Fi

Your mileage may vary on this one, but anywhere you've got your laptop and free Wi-Fi—like, say, any Starbucks in the U.S.—you can fire up a free phone call to anyone in the U.S. or Canada and chat away. There's a good chance that many free Wi-Fi hotspots don't provide you with enough bandwidth to make high enough quality calls, but if you're desperate to save on minutes (or just don't have a phone handy), it's worth a try.

The first thing to understand about Duns and Bradstreet (D&B, DnB), is that you do not HAVE to buy anything to receive a Paydex. D&B will tell you otherwise but it is not true.

The first thing to do is get a D&B number and this can be done through three ways:
First you can go online and get a number for free. It will take 30 days to get the number. It has been some peoples experience that they do not get a number after 30 days and when contacting D&B they say all you are applying for is a marketing number and you have to buy creditbuilder. This is not true.
Second, you can call 866-705-5711 and state you are applying for federal grants/contracts and you need a duns number. They will give it to you on the spot with no solicitations.
Finally you can purchase creditbuilder which will include a duns number and you also will get the number right away. Also if you speak to a rep on the phone they sometimes give you the option of buying creditbuilder lite. This can be different prices as it is not listed on the website but others have paid $199 or $250 for it.

I myself have gotten my number by stating I am applying for government contracts and got it right away. That is how others on this board have done it as well.

Now that you have a duns number I would suggest whenever you apply for a net 30 or revolving account you include this number on your order form. Start with the credit building vendors like Uline, Viking and Nebs. When you order and pay, they will report to D&B. This is how you will begin to build a credit file.
If you purchase credit builder then they should be adding vendors you have done business with in the past.

Eupdate is the tool you can use to go into your D&B file and see what trades are listed and if you have a paydex and other company information. You have to request a password. You may receive a password or you may receive an email that states you have to call them so they can help you It is my experience when you call they will tell you several things which just amount to the bottom line of you just have a marketing number and you cannot access your file until you buy creditbuilder. This is also not true. I was unable to get a password until I had trades reporting. Others have been able to get a password right away. Either way we got a password without buying anything. If you buy creditbuilder you should have no problem getting a password.

Once you have your eupdate password you can check your report as well as update you company information. It is suggested that you dont check eupdate too often or make to many changes too often. This may result in a red flag to D&B and they may lock your file. It is hard to tell what D&B may do but take the side of caution.

Now what D&B has not done as a result of you NOT buying creditbuilder is give you a D&B rating. This is the information of the rating and the chart as found on their site.

The D&B Rating field in a report may also display the following designations when certain conditions are present:
The '- -' Symbol: This represents the absence of a D&B Rating and should not be interpreted as indicating that credit should be denied. It means that the information available to D&B does not permit us to classify the company within our Rating Key and that further inquiry should be made before reaching a credit decision. Some reasons for using the "- -" symbol include: deficit net worth, bankruptcy proceedings, lack of sufficient payment information or incomplete history indicator.
DS (DUNS Support): This indicates that the information available to D&B does not permit us to classify the company within our Rating Key. When ordering these reports, an investigation can be performed and results sent to you at your request for an additional fee.
INV (Investigation Being Conducted): When an "INV" appears, it means an investigation is being conducted on this business to get the most current details.
NQ (Not Quoted): This is generally assigned when a business has been confirmed as no longer active at the location, or when D & B is unable to confirm active operations. It may also appear on some branch reports, when the branch is located in the same city as the headquarters.
Rating Classification Composite Credit Appraisal
(Based on Worth from Interim or Fiscal Balance Sheet) High Good Fair Limited
5A $50,000,000 and over 1 2 3 4
4A 10,000,000 to 49,999,999 1 2 3 4
3A 1,000,000 to 9,999,999 1 2 3 4

Some people have gotten this information without paying for something. But this information is different from a Paydex. The Paydex is what is important when applying for credit.

PAYDEX Score
The PAYDEX Score is D&B's unique dollar-weighted numerical indicator of how a firm paid its bills over the past year, based on trade experiences reported to D&B by various vendors. The D&B PAYDEX Score ranges from 1 to 100, with higher scores indicating better payment performance.

A paydex can be obtained without buying anything. The truth of the matter is it will take time. For me it took 3 and a half months. Others depending on your spending have gotten it quicker. With creditbuilder you can obtain your paydex faster.

It seems that D&B updates their information Saturday nights. So if you want to check its best to do so on Sunday as that should be the current information they have. If it is its a different story, but it should be.

D&B will call you after you get your number and try to sell you something. They will tell you your number is no good and that you will not have a credit file. They may deny you a password to eupdate. Even if you get in the file there may be information that is missing or wrong. It is suggested you call a rep and make changes and they will still try to sell you something. Be patient. Place your orders and pay the bills. The trades will show up and once you get four of five you will get a Paydex.

This is the basic of building the D&B file. I hope this answers a lot of questions that come up.
