Nas's Letter to DefJam!!!!!!!

From: Nas
To: LA Reid, Steve Bartels, Steve Gawley, Michael Seltzer, Joseph Borrino, Chris Hicks
Subject: PUT MY SH*T OUT!

Peace to all,

With all do respect to you all, Nas is NOBODY's slave. This is not the 1800's, respect me and I will respect you.

I won't even tap dance around in an email, I will get right into it. People connect to the Artist @ the end of the day, they don't connect with the executives. Honestly, nobody even cares what label puts out a great record, they care about who recorded it. Yet time and time again its the executives who always stand in the way of a creative artist's dream and aspirations. You don't help draw the truth from my deepest and most inner soul, you don't even do a great job @ selling it. The #1 problem with DEF JAM is pretty simple and obvious, the executives think they are the stars. You aren't.... not even close. As a matter of fact, you wish you were, but it didn't work out so you took a desk job. To the consumer, I COME FIRST. Stop trying to deprive them! I have a fan base that dies for my music and a RAP label that doesn't understand RAP. Pretty fucked up situation

This isn't the 90's though. Beefing with record labels is so 15 years ago. @ this point I just need you all to be very clear where I stand and how I feel about "my label." I could go on twitter or hot 97 tomorrow and get 100,000 protesters @ your building but I choose to walk my own path my own way because since day one I have been my own man. I did business with Tommy Mottola and Donnie Einer, two of the most psycho dudes this business ever created. I worked well with them for one major reason....... they believed in me. The didn't give a f**k about what any radio station or magazine said....those dudes had me.

Lost Tapes is a movement and a very important set up piece for my career as it stands. I started this over 5 years ago @ Columbia and nobody knew what it was or what it did but the label put it out as an LP and the fans went crazy for it and I single handlely built a new brand of rap albums. It's smart and after 5 years it's still a head of the game. This feels great and you not feeling what I'm feeling is disturbing. Don't get in the way of my creativity. We are aligned with the stars here, this is a movement. There is a thing called KARMA that comes to haunt you when you tamper with the aligning stars. WE ARE GIVING THE PEOPLE EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT. Stop throwing dog s**ton a MAGICAL moment.

You don't get another Nas recording that doesn't count against my deal....PERIOD! Keep your bulls**t $200,000.00 fund. Open the REAL budget. This is a New York pioneers ALBUM, there ain't many of us. I am ready to drop in the 4th quarter. You don't even have s**tcoming out! Stop being your own worst enemy. Let's get money!

to all readers, don't flip out..this is just my opinion:
without trying to sound like a "broken record',I will 1st say this is another good example of people focusing more on the individual as opposed to what is be presented for discussion.trashing personalities independent of the subject doesn't allow for successful critical engagement, instead turns this post into the usual pissing contest, where some people try to "out wit" one another,[making the whole thread look infantile in the process].

as I see it,there are 2 different angles to see here.the label, for whatever reason feels they don't have good enough product to put out.they feel their job is to push the best product they can,in order to make the most $ they can.these white people that own the companies that put rap out don't care about one's personal issues, they want their money.and they staff mufuckaz who can make this happen.alot of times they are slick talking, used car salesman types, thinking they can just fast talk the artist into doing whatever it takes to get them to hand in their project, why do you think they have closed door "marketing meetings".

on the other side of the coin, this is NAS's FAULT.nas knew how record companies get their pimp on.he came in the door with d**k up in his ass,[thru mc serch].this is a business.[other than those at the philadelphia based label ruffhouse],who at columbia really knew anything about rap? his whole discography is an example of a career filled with indecesiveness on his part.one minute he's trying to make conscious raps, the next he's trying to be a party boy,the next he's going back to raw mc skills, the next he's a gangsta thug don,the next...then after his highest profile beef with jay z,he drinks the kool aid jay offers, and signs with jay & def jam, knowing damn well the house that rush built is no more than a brand & everything that made that label special had long since left the building.did he do it for the upfront money or the publicity or both? [I think I read an interview with jay z where he even states nas's cd wasn't ready yet,it wasnt a matter of holding him back].these labels are the pimps & the artist are the hoes.and they get house niggers to keep the hoes in line.these djs, producers, artists, former artists or whatever get the opportunity to make the current roster step n fetch,or THEY will be out the door & massur will find some new house niggers to replace them.[notice when a record executive gets fired or leaves, whole staffs of people under that executive leave as well,if they can swing the way the replacement token swings].again everyone was like,oh jay z is an executive.def jam's president.no jay z is a house **** [in this stance],doing what the white man instructs him to do.l.a. reid is a house **** ,after building up his own laface brand [with the assistance of babyface, who once departing from the creative side of the label,it started to go downhill],he sold out,[much like bob johnson did with b.e.t.] to the whites.f**k the suits,f**k the demeanor, these are MODERN DAY HOUSE NIGGERS.I'm almost willing to wager 9o% of any position in the music industry is filled with house **** scum.as for them feeling like they are the stars, they are the "decesion makers",per se,so they feel their "titles",their expense accounts, their perks for working at the label, make them bigger than they truly are.and yes their are some "hoop dreams deflated" ass mufuckaz that couldn't make it to be a star,so this is where they wound up..and there a re,believe it or not, alot of people still having dreams of being artists,so they take those positions,to attempt to bolster or revitalize their own careers.this is a business.mufuckaz are monopolizing every aspect of it..and everyone in the monoply has their own agenda..

why wouldn't an artist, particularly one with an already existing fanbase, not go the independent route? own your product. make $7 [or more a unit],control your destiny.what does the cosigning of a major label in 2010 really mean? [white people picked you as the new jiggaboo? ok you get some radio & video but in 2010,technology is so out there, you dont really need that..then what do you do/ get on the videos & cheese & coon and throw money, slap bitches asses, flash jewels,(or the new jewels-cars) show your teeth, high & drunk & on whatever other drugs & act ignorant]..true,the exposure isnt the same the outlets are the same, but they are controlled by "US" which makes a big difference.[I bet many of you didnt know that suge knight, irv gotti & j prince where in the process of forming a black owned distribution network to rival those of the major labels..or did you think the feds fucking with all three of them in one form or another was a coincidence]?? n***a need to bow down at wendy day's feet & pay her consultation [and maybe even slide her sum d**k if that's what she wants-no disrespect] to learn how to truly maneuver amongst snakes, rats, vultures & house **** scum.

back in the day,you could simply turn in a bulls**t album & get released for it not selling..now mufuckaz are just shelved until the thrill is gone.maybe nas should take the cufi off & go talk to camron,[he got out of his original deal & went on to become a powerhouse with the diplomats brand].two things are for certain: 1,kelis pimped nas to the point where that dude needs to get his finances in order.tighten his brand up & go pimp himself & get his money [and pay yo taxes n***a]. & 2,with times the way they are now, economically 7 technologically, now more than ever,we as artist as hip hop as blacks in america, need to control what we create, and that means complete control, not sleeping with the enemy [and risk catching an std or something].

I don't know it all,in fact,I don't know anything.but I do know that we as a people [artists, hip hop,as blacks] cannot afford to let what is happening continue.there are too many examples of whites & sellout blacks pimping.if any pimping is going to go on,we need to pimp ourselves..we need to educate ourselves & instead of presenting the next metrosexual tight shirt & pants, man purse,d**k kissing, scarf wearing, wine drinking,f***ot dance step, sensitive ass, alabama porch monkey, getting high saying outrageous s**tfor attention,or focusing on the next shaved head bisexual white b***h fucking a n***a,who in his raps claims he's a boss, but in real life is a trick making no boss like moves,or the next video vixen who sucked & fucked her way into the limelight, then when she can't get another dollar out of her washed up wrinkled p***y,wants to write a tell all..and try to get into movies [b***h plz]..cuz she's got seeds to feed, let's try to focus on this game with intellect.get your business acumen,or for you who cant google that term, get paperwork game up.become self contained.do it for the love, not cuz you have to pay bills,to maintain a lifestyle.

"..I'll never let a hoe,pimp me.."-"pimp me" too $hort

[who incidentally doesnt own any of HIS masters either..is classified as a legend in the rap game himself, but as a business man,is just another n***a-no disrespect].
